Major highways and roads are North/South Route 95. This is an interstate that moves swiftly from Fredericksburg to points north. East/West, the major road is probably Garrisonville Road, Route 610 along which there has been development over the past ten years. Route 95 and Route 1 can be seen on the map below.
PARK AND RIDE LOTS
There are presently three commuter parking lots in the County. Each lot is located near one of the existing I-95 interchanges. The lot near Garrisonville Road, which was recently expanded, has a capacity of 768 vehicles and is presently three-fourths full. There is area available for further expansion of the lot, but land is becoming an expensive commodity in this corridor. The lot on Courthouse Road has a capacity of 536 vehicles and is nearly full. Expansion of the lot would be costly as the terrain around the lot rises sharply. The lot on Warrenton Road, which was recently expanded, has a capacity of 1030 vehicles and is presently two-thirds full. Land is readily available for future expansion.
SLUGS
Commuters desiring to join carpools on an infrequent (or frequent) basis can pick up a ride at the car-pool lots along Route 95. Drivers and riders know the locations and the rules of courtesy. If you are a rider, you are a slug. A slug is a valuable rider permitting the driver to use the HOV lanes on Route 95.
In 1969, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and state officials agreed to build a traffic lane that would allow car pool vehicles to be separate and apart from non-car pooling vehicles. The main traffic on Interstates -95 and -395 was heavily congested, which put an even bigger strain on commuters trying to travel during rush hours (6-9am and 4-7pm). The plan to construct a lane of traffic just for the HOVers to use each day has proved to be very beneficial for all involved.
